Uju Rita Onah

Research Associate

University of British Columbia, Okanagan

Dr. Uju Rita Onah is a Research Associate in the DARE Lab. Her PhD research focused on the resilience of Indigenous Igbo (Nigeria) and Labrador Inuit (Canada) communities. She challenges the status quo of archaeological practice, which is often undertaken by and for white scholars. Instead, she redirects the narrative toward a more balanced understanding of change in the Indigenous past, emphasizing Indigenous agency from the colonial era to the present. Using digital humanities methods, Dr. Onah demonstrated how Igbo and Inuit cultures have survived colonization and continue to thrive today. At the DARE Lab, Dr. Onah works with Dr. Neha Gupta on digitizing Black Heritage Collections in Canada through an African-centered lens.
